Get to know Ben
What are you doing in school?
“I'm doing Music Education at University of Maryland."
How long have you been singing in choirs?
“I started singing at my church when I was around 9 or 10, and I've never stopped doing that. I sang in my high school's choir for one year."
What is your favorite musical memory?
“Playing Shostakovich 11 in a full orchestra (playing horn) my senior year- definitely the most cathartic and immersive musical experience I've ever had. Something about being part of such a huge ensemble just gets me."
Do you have any special talents or interests outside of music?
“I played basketball from when I was 4 until I graduated high school so I'll always have a love for that sport. In my spare time I enjoy exercise, watching movies and playing video games when I have the time. I also like getting lost in a good book, when I have the time for it."
Who is your favorite composer?
"Mahler, hands down. To me, he's the guy who took what all the classical composers laid down before him and turned it into symphonies that aren't like anything anyone did before him and that no one can replicate easily. His music is just of higher quality than most other music in my opinion."
Who's your favorite non-classical musical artist?
"Recently, it's been shifting to John Mayer. I like that he writes all his own songs and doesn't rest in one genre. I also appreciate the ridiculous talent he has on guitar. He's your textbook virtuoso."
What song have you not been able to stop listening to?
"Same Damn Life by Seether. The guitar riff and their harmonies get me. It's not a new song, I just found out about it recently."
Dinosaurs or puppies?
"Dinosaurs. I love dogs but you can't beat the raw power of the dinosaur."
What’s your favorite book?
"Mercy Among the Children by David Adams Richards. It's the best written book I've ever read. The characters are extremely well developed."
What’s your favorite sports team?
"Minnesota Vikings. My dad grew up for a while in Minnesota, so he's a fan. I've been a fan for as long as I can remember."
What's your favorite thing about singing in Lux?
“Definitely the people in it. It's fun to spend time with everyone. It is also nice to have an outlet to sing too, since I don't usually get to in a choir setting."
What’s your favorite song you've sung with Lux?
"Gravedigger [arr. Timothy Takach]. I love the timbre and the low voicing."
If you were a cupcake what flavor would you be? Why?
"Grape. It's my favorite artificial flavor and I feel like it would blow people's minds. Unconventional? Yes. You'd just have to do it right."
What's the most interesting fact about you?
"I'm gonna go with my eyes are two different colors. Left blue, right green."
Ben Busch has sung five seasons with Lux. He is a sophomore at the University of Maryland, studying instrumental Music Education. He exclusively studies French Horn in Professor Greg Miller's studio. In school, Ben has played with the Wind Ensemble and Adequintet, a brass quintet. Outside of class, he takes gigs playing the piano and the guitar, and is looking forward to learning how to teach most of the instruments in the orchestra in the next few years.
