Lux's Education Initiative is a uniquely immersive opportunity for high school-aged singers, allowing students to rehearse, converse, and perform with a professional chamber choir. Once you've read all about our educational outreach, it's time to learn more about the Lux Education Initiative itself!
How's it work? Once accepted into the program, students be sent the scores for about 15 minutes of music. Students will prepare this repertoire on their own in their entirety, with the help of our practice tracks, before arriving at rehearsals. Once rehearsals begin, students will meet Lux's Mentor Artists, who will assist them in sectionals and will serve as musical mentors throughout their time in the Education Initiative. After a few rehearsals on their own, students will join Lux to rehearse the repertoire they'll sing alongside the group! Afterwards, students will have the opportunity to share a meal with Lux's professional singers, where you can get to know them (and each other), and ask as many questions as you'd like! Once rehearsals have completed, students will perform in both Lux concerts on May 16 & 17 on their own and alongside Lux! When and where are rehearsals? Rehearsals are typically held in or near College Park, MD, dress rehearsals most often occur in the concert venue. Specific rehearsal dates can be found below, and locations will be confirmed upon acceptance to the Education Initiative. Right here! Use the buttons below to get started.
When's the application due? Both applications, the student audition form, and the teacher recommendation form, are due March 28 at 11:59pm. Are there any fees? Once accepted, there is a one-time fee of $25*. If a student is not accepted, there is no charge. *If this cost is prohibitive to a student and their family, please reach out to Han Wagner at [email protected]. What's the application like? There are two parts to the application: a student audition form, and a teacher recommendation form. In the audition form, you will be asked some basic information (name, voice part, etc.), and you will be prompted to upload an audition video of yourself singing Irish Folksong in the key assigned to your voice part. If you prefer to sing an art song or aria in place of Irish Folksong, that is just fine!
The keys are assigned as follows:
Who will I be singing with? Each of the four major voice parts will have a Lux Mentor, who is singing with Lux on this project. You'll get to interact and sing with more than just this one person, as you'll sing alongside the participating students and all of Lux's singers for this project!
