Lux's Young Artist Program is a uniquely immersive opportunity for high school-aged singers, allowing students to rehearse, converse, and perform with a professional chamber choir. Once you've read all about our education initiative, it's time to learn more about the Young Artist Program itself!
How's it work? Once you're accepted into the program, you'll be given specific dates & times for 2 music rehearsals, a dress rehearsal, and a performance. You will be sent the scores for 2 pieces of music, which you will need to prepare on your own in their entirety before arriving at rehearsals. Once rehearsals come around, you'll arrive and meet the Lux singer you've been paired with, along with the rest of the group. We'll start rehearsal with a warmup, and away we'll go! We will rehearse for two hours, and afterwards will have an hour or two to eat dinner with all the Lux singers and Young Artists, where you can get to know us (and each other) and ask as many questions as you'd like! Finally, you'll arrive at the dress rehearsal to receive final instructions regarding standing formations, etc. You'll also get the chance to run the pieces again with the full group in our home performance space. Finally, you'll arrive at call time for the concert, participate in a quick tune-up rehearsal, and perform on stage with Lux at our home venue! When and where are rehearsals? Rehearsals are typically held in the evening at St. Jerome Academy in Hyattsville, MD, just outside of College Park. Specific rehearsal dates will be announced as we approach Lux's Summer season. Parents are encouraged to drop off and pickup students who are not driving to rehearsals. Where do I apply? Right here! Use the buttons below to get started.
When's the application due? Both applications, the student audition form, and the teacher recommendation form, are due June 28, 2020. Are there any fees? Once accepted, there is a one-time fee of $25. If a student is not accepted, there is no charge. What's the application like? There are two parts to the application: a student audition form, and a teacher recommendation form. In the audition form, you will be asked some basic information (name, voice part, etc.), and you will be prompted to upload an audition video of yourself singing Irish Folksong in the key assigned to your voice part. The keys are assigned as follows:
Who will I be singing with? Based on your application and audition video, we'll pair you up with one of our singers whose voice matches similarly with yours, so you can get the most out of your experience, and get to know what we do with each individual voice to influence the sound of the entire group! You'll get to interact and sing with more than just this one person, but think of them sort of as your "buddy" or your "big" in a big/little program. Want to start getting to know our singers now?
